Roxbury Puddingstone and Elm

The rock was found by the artist in a field in New Hampshire and its character was only revealed in the process of carving. It can now be identified as Roxbury Puddingstone that must have been brought to the site by glaciers. The wood that forms its base is American Elm. There are only a few holdout populations of this tree in existance and this one was falling down on the land of the artist’s studio. The plinth was made from stones found on site.

Shake may reflect ancestral covenants. It is direct carved from a fieldstone, not based upon a previously existing model. The form of the carving is an intuitive response to the material.
