This Ancient Inflatable Palm makes visible a history that we can only imagine. The perennial inflatable plant represents a group of early fern-like plants called Wattieza. Like algae, ferns, and fungi, Wattieza reproduced via spores. They stood thirty feet tall and looked similar to today’s palm trees.
While preceding dinosaurs by around 140 million years, these trees still shape our climate today. A fossilized grove of Wattieza, which dates back 385 million years to the Middle Devonian was uncovered in 1870. This discovery could help explain the role that early forests played in climate change. The rise of forests removed carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which caused temperatures to drop and the planet became similar to its present-day condition.
This inflatable sculpture is both enterable and bounceable for children and adults alike, for up to 2-4 guests at a time.
